Phil on His PM-Grind Wedges: ‘They Were Critical To My Success’

By April 13, 2015Headlines, Tour News

Phil Mickelson played well enough to win at Augusta, and he was right in it as he went toe-to-toe with one of the best performances in the tournament’s history. Lefty played 14 Callaway clubs at the major, and he hit some of the best shots of the event with his Big Bertha Alpha 815 Double Black Diamond Driver and especially his new Mack Daddy PM-Grind Wedges.

After his round on Sunday, GOLFWEEK’s Jim Achenbach asked him about those PM Grind wedges…

Q. How many of the PM wedges did you carry, and your reaction under the pressure of a major championship?

PHIL:  I carried three, as many as I could, as many as we make, a 56, 60 and 64.And they were critical for my success this week.  My bunker play has never been this good, and I hit some shots out of the sand; I holed it on 15; I hit two shots yesterday out of 7 and 12 that were almost impossible given the lie that I had, and yet the ball came out with spin.  So they were critical to my success.

Here are some of the most important clubs that the five-time major winner had in the bag:

Big Bertha Alpha 815 Double Black Diamond Driver (8.5*)

Mack Daddy PM Grind Wedge (56*)

Mack Daddy PM Grind Wedge (60*)

Mack Daddy PM Grind Wedge (64*)

Odyssey PM Putter

His Mack Daddy PM-Grind Wedges

Where do we start with his amazing short game performance? He put on an absolute clinic and you can even rank his top 5 wedge shots at Augusta.

Phil of course was extremely instrumental in the Mack Daddy PM-Grind design and he gave his direct input to Callaway wedge maker Roger Cleveland. Augusta was one of the specific tournaments they worked toward in making this wedge that allows golfers to play aggressively even on the toughest shots around the green.

His Driver

Phil has been a huge fan of the Big Bertha Alpha Double Black Diamond, which he put into play in his first start of 2015. He consistently hit the fairways on Par-5s at Augusta, and he was 15-under on the Par-5s for the week – that’s ridiculous! Phil particularly likes that he can get high launch and very low spin with this driver to get the most efficiency for distance.

We want to congratulate Phil on his spectacular performance for the week: 14-under, 70 or better in all 4 rounds, and a strong runner-up finish at an event he’s won 3 times before. Great playing, Lefty!
