Mack Daddy 2 Wedges – More Spin and Versatility From Everywhere

By June 27, 2013Product News

Callaway Chief Designer Roger Cleveland has crafted an unparalleled scoring club with the new Tour tested Mack Daddy 2 Wedges, available July 12 at retail and on shop.callaway. Roger has combined Tour players’ feedback on head shape and feel with an aggressive larger groove pattern and increased surface roughness for more spin and versatility from everywhere.

The Mack Daddy 2’s grooves operate under a clear performance message: “The bigger the grooves, the better the spin.” A 5V Groove Pattern features 39% larger grooves that provide 25% more spin out of the rough*. The added spin is designed for more control and aggressive shot-making into the green from any lie.

The Laser Milled Micro Grooves increase surface roughness to make Mack Daddy 2 even more versatile with better spin and control. Roger is confident that the grooves and grinds will have a significant impact on golfers’ scores.

“Golfers ask their lob wedges to perform a lot of different shots so it’s important to design these wedges to be extremely forgiving and versatile,” Roger said. “And that’s what we’ve done with these new grooves and the added custom grinds (editor’s note: more on that later). The MD2’s will be a must for the golfer who wants to perform to his or her best in the toughest of conditions.”

There’s a reason (well actually more like 1,000 reasons) why Roger is a legendary wedge designer; he works closely with the best players in the world and when they offer their advice, he listens.

The detailed shape of the Mack Daddy 2 Wedges was inspired by our popular and Tour proven X Forged ’08 models, and he consulted thorough feedback from Staff Pros to ensure that the new wedges have all the attributes Tour players want. They’re also forged from 1020 carbon steel for soft feel.

These wedges have become an instant success on the PGA Tour, where Phil Mickelson, Trevor Immelman, Chris Kirk and Luke List are already playing them.

Remember the shot that Phil holed out for eagle at the US Open? The one that he played out of the thick Merion rough, landed soft on the green and rolled right in the cup? The one that had the gallery screaming for minutes afterward? Yeah, he did that with a Mack Daddy 2.

CUSTOM SOLE GRINDS (C-Grind and U-Grind)

Our custom C-Grind and U-Grind designs are available on our 58° and 60° Mack Daddy 2 Wedges. For the C-Grind, relief is ground out of the heel and toe so golfers can lay the face open without creating too much bounce angle. This sole allows for the right contact in firm or soft conditions with maximized spin and control.

The U-Grind was inspired by Mickelson himself, and it significantly relieves the heel and toe so the leading edge can stay low and under the ball when opening the face to add loft. Like the C-Grind, it’s versatile in firm and soft conditions. We also have the Standard option for all of our lofts.

The Mack Daddy 2s come in a Chrome finish with a smoky, muted look that reduces glare or a Slate finish that oxidizes over time for a distinctive look.

These wedges will be available in July in 52°, 56°, 58° and 60° lofts. A second wave of options will be coming in November, including 47°, 50°, 54° and 64°, and additional sole grind offerings for the 56° wedge. Here are the grind options for our July offerings:

52°: Offered in Standard sole grind

56°: Offered in Standard sole grind

58°: Offered in Standard sole grind, U-Grind and C-Grind

60°: Offered in Standard sole grind, U-Grind and C-Grind

    • Laurent s says:

Thats when all the new products come out from golf companies so they are trying to guarentee the hype for their wedges.

      • Callaway Golf Callaway Golf says:

        Hi Matt and Laurent,

In our first launch we wanted to focus on the core lofts and introducing them to Tour, where they were an immediate success and were even in Phil Mickelson’s bag for his major win in Scotland.

Now that we’ve successfully introduced our core lofts, we’re moving toward our second launch by designing and getting feedback from Tour players on new bounce and sole grind offerings so that we can offer additional low bounce or custom grinds to lofts we originally had not planned on.

The goal is to give our customers more Mack Daddy 2 options that they can control with a Tour tested shape and more spin!
