Phil Shoots 28 On Back, Posts 63 To Lead At Deutsche Bank

Well that was a fun way to get the holiday weekend started! As if he wasn’t having a hot enough summer already, Phil Mickelson put up a 28 on the back nine (his first nine of the day) and a 63 on the board Friday to take the first round lead at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Now he’s staring down his fourth worldwide win of 2013 and a chance to firmly put himself in the driver seat for Player of the Year.

Here’s the quick rundown of what Callaway clubs are in Phil’s bag this week, courtesy of our VP of Pro Tour, Nick Raffaele:

X Hot Phrankenwood Driver
X Hot 3Deep Fairway Wood (13°)
X Forged Irons (4-PW)
Mack Daddy 2 Wedges (52°, 56°, 60°)
A HEX Chrome+ Golf Ball
Odyssey Versa #9 White Putter

Phil was lights out with his putter all day and at 5:30 P.M. ET on Friday he was 1st in the field in putting average, 1st in putts per GIR, and 3rd in strokes gained – putting (at a ridiculous 4.295).

He started out strong with birdies on 10 and 11 (his opening holes of the day), and after pars at 12 and 13 he rattled off five straight birdies to end his first nine holes. He also rolled in an eagle at the par-5 2nd to keep his momentum going.

If Phil wins on Monday, he’s projected to move to 1st in the FedExCup Playoffs with just two tournaments left. Boom! Go get ’em, Phil!
