Mickelson’s Grand Slam and the Top 5 Callaway Storylines at Pinehurst

It’s a major week – enough said. You’re ready, we’re ready, so let’s kick it off with the top 5 Callaway storylines at Pinehurst.

1. It’s Kind Of A Big Week For Lefty

You may have heard that our guy Phil Mickelson is looking to join the career grand slam club with a win this week at Pinehurst. It’s a course he’s played well and an event that he’s posted six runner-up finishes in over the years.

All eyes will be on him this week as he tries to win that last elusive major, and now that he’s got a new 56-degree Mack Daddy 2 Tour Grind Wedge in the bag, he’s dialed in to bring it on home at Pinehurst. You can hear how he feels about all the attention in this special Callaway Talks episode.

2. Scramble On Home

Pinehurst boasts some of the most famous (and tricky) greens in golf, highlighted by false fronts and greens that run off on all sides. Players will face all kinds of difficult short shots and they’ll have to decide whether to play anything from a bump-and-run, to a flop shot, or roll a hybrid or putter up the hill. The lob shot is going to be a really important option too, and our Director of Fitting and Instruction, Randy Peterson shows you how to hit it in our special Pinehurst Wedgeducation video.

The winner will have to scramble well to save pars, and that’s where players with strong short games like Mickelson, Chris Kirk, and Matt Every will be at their best. Players will need to be creative and consistent around the greens if they want to get into contention on Sunday.

3. It’s Rough Out There

Forget the graduated rough you’re used to seeing at this event. At Pinehurst, some of the sand-filled lies will be absolutely brutal for players who miss the fairways. It’s a long layout too, which will make it even more difficult to recover and salvage par after wayward tee shots.

That’s why guys like Jim Furyk (Big Bertha Driver) and Brian Stuard (X2 Hot Pro) will do well this week – they’ll keep it in play and avoid big numbers on their scorecards.

4. Young Guns Ready To Make Noise

Harris English, Patrick Reed, Kirk, Gary Woodland, Every. 5 rising stars on Tour, all 30 or younger, and all of them are having big years. Could Woodland power his Big Bertha through Pinehurst and up the leaderboard? Will Kirk’s consistency give him a leg up on the field? And will Harris’ pure all-around game lead to his first major win? They’re all giving us reasons to believe this week.

5. The #ZooCrew Is On The Scene

We’ll be coming at you this week with live updates from Pinehurst, including all the awesome images from @HashtagChad, news from the Tour Trailer with @ScottGorylCG and a whole lot more.
